Sevenoaks Acorns 56 - Maidstone Vets 5
13 Nov 2006
Following the forfeit by Vigo in the league Sevenoaks Acorns maintained their unbeaten start to the season recording their 7th victory in 8 games by outplaying a gutsy Maidstone Vets side.
Despite not finding the fluency of their recent cup win the Acorns scored 10 tries, seven of which came in a one-sided second half. They also created a host of other opportunities that were lost to some poor handling in good conditions for running rugby.
After Maidstone had started brightly Sevenoaks finally found some fluidity with Gerry scoring a wonderful try following hard work by Smith and Gilmour going over for his first try on his way to a hat-trick. A further excellent try created by the pace of Nicholson that was finished superbly by the hardworking Hopkins lead to a 15-0 lead that was rarely threatened.
Maidstone picked up the pace of their game in the last quarter of the first half and fought hard for territory and started to create some errors in the home sides handling. A quickly taken penalty and an injury for fly half Cotterell lead to a deserved try for the visitors before the half time break.
Realising that they had to set the standards for the way they were going to play Sevenoaks Acorns stepped up a gear after the restart. Replacing the excellent Pollard with Thresher brought a second try for ex England “A” number 8 in two games. This was followed with Bowler on his return scoring and Carling adding to his tally as the clubs top try scorer.
Gilmour completed his hat-trick with a brace of tries, one from the halfway line and good work from Reeve and Carling saw a wonderful galloping Gibbs score in the corner. The brilliant Mortassagne completed the scoring in the opposite corner on the final whistle with Hopkins adding 3 conversions.
