Former Sevenoaks players make mark
It was a big day for Sevenoaks Rugby in more ways than on Saturday. Not only did the club’s 1st XV post their first win of the season in the comprehensive 29-0 demolition of Guildford, but elsewhere former Sevenoaks players were providing reminders of just what a successful nursery for quality rugby players the club has been in recent years.
At Kingsholm, home of powerful Gloucester, ex-Oak and England U-21 international Tom May lined up at fullback, alongside returning England World Cup hero Toby Flood, for the visitors Newcastle in the EDF Energy Cup. Newcastle were 12-6 up at half time but England international and ex-Oak Andy Titterell came on as a half-time replacement for Aussie hooker Jeremy Paul and, according to the Gloucester website, was instrumental in a second-half recovery that led to an 18-all draw.
England and ex-Sevenoaks prop Dave Flatman returned to first-team duty for Bath at the Recreation Ground against mighty Leicester in the same competition. Along with another ex-Oak and England U-21 star, lock Martin Purdy, he helped Bath to a memorable 20-14 victory over the Tigers in the same competition.
Finally, prop Tom Warren, another England U-21 and former Sevenoaks player, was in 1st XV action for London Irish at the Madejski Stadium. But even Tom could not prevent Irish from going down 8-10 to a Harlequins side inspired by England’s Dave Strettle.
