Sevenoaks make prestigious Head Coach appointment

05 Jul 2011

Legendary Danny Vaughan heads up coaching team for 2011/12 season

Sevenoaks Rugby Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Danny Vaughan as head coach, with immediate effect.

One of Kent's most renowned coaches, Vaughan brings a wealth of high level experience and a track record of proven success to Sevenoaks. From 2004 until 2011 he was head coach at Canterbury, leading them to four consecutive Kent Cup victories and promotion to National Division 2 - rugby's Level 4. In 2006, Canterbury won the prestigious Rugby World National team of the year award under Danny's leadership.

Prior to joining Canterbury, Vaughan was head coach at Blackheath, Kent's premier rugby club, where he gained further national League experience, and at Westcombe Park, with which he also won the Kent Cup.

A full-time rugby coach, Vaughan is employed by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) as a Community Rugby Coach for East Kent and is one of the few coaches to hold RFU Level 4 coaching status. He is a member of the Red Rose Masterclass Elite Coaches Programme at Twickenham.

Outside of club rugby, Vaughan followed a two-year period as head coach of the Kent County U23 squad by taking over as head coach of the full Kent senior squad in 2002, a position he held for six years. He has also coached at the University of Kent, and run development sessions for the Estonian national squad. As a player, Vaughan gained huge experience with Blackheath, for whom he played more than 150 1st XV games.

Sevenoaks Senior Rugby Chairman Paul Shirtcliff welcomed the appointment, saying: "Danny is one of Kent's foremost coaches and his track record speaks for itself. We are delighted to have him on board at Sevenoaks and feel sure his appointment will give our players the boost they need to take their rugby education on to the next level."

Club Chairman Lee Adamson echoed the sentiments, adding: "These are exciting times for Sevenoaks, with the improvement of our facilities moving ahead and our national championship-winning academy players now filtering through to senior rugby. Danny's appointment sends a very positive signal about our ambitions and intentions on the field, too."
