A letter from our new captain
24 Jun 2011
Dear All,
We are now looking in great shape for the up-coming season.
As you may or may not have heard I have taken on the role of Club Captain and just wanted to pass on a few items that we have been working on as we build to pre-season.
- Pre-Season Training will start on Tuesday 5th July at 19:30 (Touch from 19:00) and run every Tuesday and Thursday at Wildernesse School on their playing fields behind the sports hall.
I'm afraid there will be no showering or changing facilities while we are there. Training will then move back to the club on 18th July. There will also be specialist fitness input at training.
We have pre-season games booked in as follows:
20th August Medway Away (actually kent cup round 1)
27th August proposed mini tour (1 day 1 night) yet to be finalised
3rd September 1st and 2nd squad for 2 games at Romford away
10th September League Season starts
Our new head coach is Danny Vaughan - he has massive experience coaching at National Level rugby, is a Level 4 RFU coach and has 150 1st team games for Blackheath under his belt. We will be backing him up with an assistant coach who will travel and watch all 2nd team games (interviews still underway) and Mark Reay and Jon Muchmore will be running a development squad focussed around the 3rd XV. All of this will allow smooth flow of talent and reward for training/performance between the senior teams.
Selection - we will publish a new selection policy at the start of the season so that all of us know where we stand and the level of commitment expected. We will also be asking for short and long term views on availability.
Recruitment - an article will be appearing in the Chronicle next week around tapping into local talent. As ever the key is a good base of players to create a competitive squad. If you know anyone you can bring down of whatever standard then please make every effort to do so. Flyers and posters will be popping up around town over the next few weeks but we really need to help eachother in drawing people in.
Having accepted this role I have every intention to throw everything that I have into it and make sure all players views, concerns and ideas are fully aired. If you have any suggestions at all about shaping 2011/12 season please get in touch. I will be providing news and relevant updates on twitter so please hook into @SRFCClubCaptain. As always the website will be up to speed also.
Looking forward to it and know we will have a very good time along the way.
Best regards
George Roffey
