Another sad loss
Please note funeral on Wednesday 22nd (not Tuesday as previously advised)
Philip Bevans
It seems we are in a period when too many stalwarts of the rugby club are passing away and it is with sadness we have to inform you of the death of Philip Bevans at the age of 57 who is the fourth member of the club to have died in the last five weeks. Philip had been battling cancer for some time and had bravely undertaken long periods of chemotherapy and radiotherapy but still, typically, was to be seen about Sevenoaks despite losing all his hair and a considerable amount of weight. This was typical as he had an inner determination to be his own man despite what the world threw at him.
Philip's parents Bernard, a Fleet Air Arm man, and Barbara lived in Chipstead and Philip was educated at Judd school and Loughborough. On leaving he joined the Queen's stockbroker, Cazanove, where he remained for several years. He then worked for several other financial institutions and finally left the city to work at maintaining the various properties that Sarah and he owned. After his first marriage failed he met Sarah and found his soul mate and entered into the happiest period of his life. I am sure that Sarah is absolutely devastated at this time and our sincere condolences have been passed to her at this time of her great loss.
Philip joined the rugby club on leaving school and played for many seasons in the senior sides finishing his playing career in the infamous Acorns veterans side. He was a determined player who always gave you one hundred percent but his playing days were cut short by injury. Players from this period often recall stories concerning Philip, or ‘Honest Phil' as he was known, for example the time he was in charge of washing the shirts but forgot and the team had to play in kit that smelt quite bad but Philip maintained that it would put the opposition off more than us and he was proved to be quite correct. He was also a founder member of the Galliano club which involved buying a jug of Galliano and orange juice for the princely sum of five pounds. The quantity consumed gave the club the distinction of selling more Galliano and Britvic orange juice than any other outlet in the south east.
Philip's funeral will take place at 13.30 on Wedesday 22nd December 2010 in Kippington Church
