SRFC President Howard Pearl pays tribute

MIKE LISCOMBE (1945 – 2010)

It is with great regret that we report the sudden death of Mike Liscombe on 10th November, a long time member and past Vice President of Sevenoaks RFC.

Mike was one of the half dozen or so of us to witness the birth of Mini Rugby in 1978, and soon after he became involved on both the coaching and administration of this new venture in our Club’s history.  His son Tim started on the age group ladder in the Under 8s in 1984 and Mike continued to coach and manage that squad all the way up to Under 17s.

Always an enthusiast in whatever project he entered, Mike joined the ranks of the Acorns in 1980 and was a vigorous if somewhat unconventional participant in many contests on the Cabbage Patch and opposing fields.  He captained the side for a couple of seasons and was an enthusiastic member when Alastair Jolley reformed the XV in 1989.  Mike retired for the fourth and final time in the Spring of 1992.

At the end of the 1993/94 season Mike was elected a Vice President in recognition of his selfless endeavours in the Junior Section for upwards of 15 years and for his infectious enthusiasm at senior level both on and off the field.

Having played his part in launching the Minis and re-launching the Acorns, Mike then decided to take a back seat.  However, with his second wife Janet usually alongside him, he was always accosting any SRFC member in the High Street who was known to him to talk about local rugby, family and friends.  He especially liked cornering our Chairman Lee Adamson in Waitrose to reminisce on past escapades with the Acorns.

Mike has been a unique character who enlivened our Club for many seasons.  All his friends and acquaintances will miss him, and I know we all send our sincere condolences to Janet and his own children Amanda and Tim, plus Janet’s daughters Lindsay and Beth.

Mike’s funeral will at 11.00 on Friday 26th November at Tunbridge Wells Crematorium.
