Sunday 18th April - Westcombe Park Festival
19 Apr 2010
Following on from last week's great win at Worthing Sevenoaks got off to a flying start against Blackheath who looked slightly shell shocked at the intensity of Sevenoaks attack in the first game of the tournament. Two well worked tries and none against meant we were off to a flying start. Next up were Crowborough and Sevenoaks took an early lead with Crowborugh unable to make any headway against the Sevenoaks defence. An uncharacteristic lapse after half time saw Crowborough get a try back, but Sevenoaks regrouped and took the game 3-1. We now had to face Heathfield a team we had struggled against in the old days of tag. Sevenoaks produced a game of superb all round rugby with solid defence, speed in attack and forward domination at the breakdown. Heathfield had no answer to the relentless pressure and we finished the game at 3-0. The final game of the group was against Upminster A team who we had never beaten. Right from the whistle Sevenoaks closed down every attack that Upminster threw at them and despite being camped on the Sevenoaks line none of the pressure could be converted into points. At the start of the second half Upminster's frustrations continued with the biggest tackle of the game coming from our smallest player Ewan Martin. This continued pressure from Sevenoaks paid dividends with a driving try which was unanswered and we took a well deserved win 1-0 against a very strong team. As group winners we now had to play Old Elthamians in the Cup Semi finals. As soon as the game kicked off OE's realised they were going to have to work hard to break the Sevenoaks defence. Backs move after backs move was snuffed out by solid defending and OE's were struggling to contain our attacks. After half time we started off in the same manner we had finished the first half and Sevenoaks fitness levels were really stertching OE's. Eventually it paid dividends and Sevenoaks took the lead. Celebrations were brought to an end a minute from time by a well worked OE's try who never gave up. The game finished at 1-1 and tournament rules dictated a try count back which put Old Elthamians through to the final. So despite not loosing a game we were out. The team knew they had played well and each and everyone of them had done Sevenoaks Rugby Club proud.
