28th March - Crowborough B Festival
06 Apr 2010
We took 14 players to the Crowborough B Festival.
Everyone of the boys played a full part in the games; the
enthusiasm, commitment and play was fantastic.
Our first game was against Crowborough. We won 10 - 0.
The team was concentrating from the kick off and really took the
game to the Crowborough. We were too strong in all aspects of
the game - forward over the gain line and good distribution and
running in the backs.
The second game was a very tight 1 - 0 win against an
extremely physical Tunbridge Wells. It was our defensive play in
this game that I believe really won it for us. I would like to
mention Josh for his support play in this game (and I believe he
got the try!). I would also like to say well done to the boys for
keeping their discipline.
The third and final game was against Hove. Although we
won 3 - 0, this was a very tight game against a strong team. The
first half was particularly tough with their forwards slightly edging
the gain line battle, one try scored by Rococo was made the
difference. At half time we spoke about the forward battle and
what we had to do to change things. Our forwards took this on
board and immediately managed dominate and consequently
our back line was able to function more fluidly runningin a
couple of tries. John organised our attack and defensive play
extremely well - really closing them down - early, big hits. Tackle
of the match for me was right at the end where Christiaan held
on to the Hove man for dear life allowing us time to put him into
touch!
Rococo deservedly won our man of the day cup. Tackle
count and try count second to none.
Well done boys - FANTASTIC!!

FEEDBACK:
T h e b o y s
have cottoned on
w e l l t o t h e
differential in roles between forwards and backs.
BACKS - Our attacking play over the last two tournaments
is really taking shape with good passing down the back line with
the boys running on to the ball at speed. There were occasions
where the line lost shape; the boys need to keep their position
on the field and not be tempted into the rucks and mauls - leave
it to the forwards!! I would like to see the wings run with the ball
a little more.
FORWARDS - Our forwards are also very happy to run with
the ball in hand and their support play is excellent - Their target
must be to get to the breakdown first and push as hard as theycan in the rucks and mauls (using their shoulders rather than
hands as the major point of contact) - pushing the opposition off
the ball.
Defensive play was obviously awesome, letting no tries in.
The boys really have stepped up a level with regards to their
tackling. Remember - don’t give them any room - move towards
them.
NEXT STEPS (in addition to the above)
- We need to have a couple of back moves.
- Kick off / penalties - we need to have a few moves.
- Lines of defensive play for forwards - e.g. Who hits the fly
half? Who covers the blind side?
Thank you all. Will be in touch re our next games asap
