Sunday 4th April - Saracens Minis at Tonbridge Juddians
06 Apr 2010
UNDER 9’S WIN 3 OUT OF 3. TEN TRIES SCORED AND ONE CONCEDED!
I have to say that I am very proud of you chaps. We
went to Tonbridge Juddians with a squad that had not
played together as a team, but boy, were you a team - and
most of you forwards!!!
Team:
P. Edward Harris
H. Ieuan Robinson / George Prout
P. Tom Harris
SH. Ewan Martin
FH. Charlie Corrigan
W. Will Vickery
IC. Rocco Zanelli
OC. Dan Mamas
W. Will Dickinson
Our first Game was against TJ’s
where we won 4 - 0. A convincing
victory. In my opinion, Will Dickinson
had his best game of rugby for the
U9’s (on the wing!) - cracking tackles,
good field posi t ion and some
excellent runs. Tom, Edward, Ieuan and George were
everywhere - tackles, pushing in the rucks and mauls. Ieuan
hit one of the rucks and caused carnage - bodies
everywhere! Charlie organised the back line very effectively,
both in defense and attack - I especially appreciated the fact
that he got all the backs involved (as he did for the whole of
the tournament). We kept our defensive line - up on the
opposition - giving them no room to move.
Our second game was against the other half of the TJ’s
squad. We won 4 - 1. Dan Mamas made some fantastic
runs and scored a couple of tries. Rocco and Ewan, as per
norm, had some great runs, covering tackles - second to
none. Edward had his best game for the U9‘s - tackling and
pushing in the rucks and mauls. Will Vickery was the dream
tackler (on the wing) - made them regret coming his way and
was up on his feet immediately looking for the next one! Our
one failing of the day was in the last minute - we lost our
defensive line with all but one of our backs in the ruck!!!
Unfortunately TJ’s won the ball and ran in the only try of the
day against us. This was a useful lesson that we put to good
effect against Saracens - our next
match.
I have to say I was nervous before the
Saracens match. I had kept an eye on
them during their other matches (all
of which they won). Their play was
extremely well organised - rucking
and mauling their opponents very
effectively - giving them momentum
and the gain line.
The first half against Saracens was
f rant ic; constant tackles and
defending. I am not sure we got out
of our half. No tries conceded. We
talked at half time - we discussed and agreed that “coming
second sucks”! Saracens did not know what hit them - all
the forwards stepped up their game. Tom, especially, made
a huge contribution in the second half; changing the gain
line competition so that we were on the front foot for the
rest of the match - for this, and his general play, I would give
him man of the day. Dan and Rocco made some powerful
runs through their defense. Two tries scored in the second
half. We won 2 - 0. Oh yes!! A wonderful team effort.
You boys deserved your wins today and you should be
very proud of yourselves. No one had a clean shirt! Coming
first is a great feeling?
