13th December Harlequins Curtain Raiser Cup
14 Dec 2009
Sevenoaks just miss out on qualification after some great rugby and a spirited performance by the whole team
The competition kicked off early ahead of the Harlequins game against Sale in the afternoon. The rain inflicted cancellations of the previous weeks meant Sevenoaks started slowly and nervously in their first match against Guildfordians. Sevenoaks defended well and started to make some meaningful territory through solid forward drives, however Guildford managed to somehow get possession of the ball and an overcomitted Sevenoaks team were left exposed in defence and Guildford duly scored a break away try. Sevenoaks stuck to their game plan of solid running backed by strong maulling but just could not break over the try line despite dominating possesion. Another quick try by Guildford sealed the game at 2-0. Next up were Old Caterhamians and Sevenoaks started the game at full throttle going into half time with a 2 nil lead both tries scored by a determined Oliver Green. The second half saw more of the same with superb positional driving by the team, with Ewan Martin leaping in to score the third. Time ran down without Sevenoaks unable to get the crucial 4th try for a bonus point. The final game of qualification was against Rosyln Park and a must win game if Sevenoaks were going to get through as the best runner up. Sevenoaks produced their best rugby of the tournament with superb running and passing followed by determind tackling putting Oliver Green in for a try. After half time Sevenoaks just needed to keep the same form to clinch the match, however inspired use of substitutes by Roslyn levelled the scores with a superb solo try. Despite getting close and having one try disallowed we just could not break through and eventually the match was drawn. The whole team played superbly showing great character and despite narrowly missing out on the next round all the Squad were a credit to Sevenoaks Rugby Club.
The Squad, Kamran Apromam, Jack Anderson, James Blunden, Charlie Corrigan, Oliver Green, Tom Harris, Joe Hayward, Max Humphrey, Lucas Ireland, Archie Johnstone, Marky Lessups, George Spice
