Southend Elite Festival
20 Oct 2009
The under 9's show great character against strong opposition to get to the final.
Southend Tigers, Brentwood and Colechester in Pool A.
Sevenoaks, Southend and Upminster in Pool B
Our first match was against Upminster. Tough first half with the ball being kept tight in an upfront battle. Second half, the boys listened to "get the ball out wide & away from the contact area" - Archie Johnstone scored two very well worked tries. Good defense - no tries against.
The second match was against Southend - the boys realised almost immediately that this was a step up in competition. Our boys quickly sorted themselves out, however, great organisation and rucking skills from Southend resulted in a final score of 4 - 1 to Southend. Charlie Corrigan scored our try - a few good passes and a great run in by Charlie. I have to say our boys showed great character and tackled their hearts out - great defence. (Southend beat Upminster 9 - 1 in their prior game).
We were therefore runners up of Pool B which put us into the semi finals.
In the Semi finals we met Colechester, the winners of Pool A.
Our boys really started to fire, a great game. Their best game. Fantastic covering and tackling (special mentions - Charlie, Tom, Archie, Ewan). Attack was well organised with some great passing, culminating in three tries, Max Humphreys (first try for the team), George and Tom. No scores against.
This put us through to the final - against Southend!! Our lads came out fighting. We went down 4 - 1....again. Southend were very physical. Their lads were fast and big! Again, their rucking and mauling skills were very well organised. Also, the Southend strength of running was very good - at speed. Again, our covering tackling was exceptional - real character shown by the chaps, fighting until the end.
