Under 9's win at Hastings and Bexhill festival

12 Oct 2009

A great tournament win for a young team growing in confidence each week.

Right from the start of their first game there was a steely determination to Sevenoaks. Haywards Heath tried to break through the Sevenoaks defence but it held solid. In the end with the slope on their side Sevenoaks attack cut loose and won the match 2 tries to 1. Ewan Martin and Kamran Amromam were notable in their tackling and winning the ball at breakdowns. Next up were Heathfield and again excellent running and cover tackles by Edward Harris and Lucas Ireland kept Heathfield at bay. George Spice took an excellent try and also James Blunden broke loose to seal the game with a well worked try supported by Jack Anderson. Sevenoaks then played the hosts Hastings and put a great display of all round rugby eventually scoring 6 tries. Max Humphries put in some great tackles and several times Marcus Lessups turn of speed prooved too much for the Hastings defence. The last game against Eastbourne was the decider for a place in the final with Sevenoaks requiring a draw to go through. The game was end to end and time and again Oliver Green made try saving tackles, this pressure eventually wore the opposition down and Sevenoaks eventually opened the scoring. A last minute break by Eastbourne rewarded their efforts with a try but it was Sevenoaks who went through to face Hove in the final. With the rain driving down the game was surprisingly fast with both teams showing great defense and looking dangerous on the break. The match finished drawn 0-0 and Sevenoaks were awarded the trophy according to tournament rules of a coin toss, which was nice to win as the team had lost several of these at tournaments in the past. The team received their trophies from the Mayor of Hastings.
