The Worthing Festival

22 Mar 2007

Sevenoaks Under 9s had an excellent day out and played some fantastic rugby, in fact their best of the season, at the Worthing "B" Festival last Sunday. The team started by winning its pool with its first victory being over Effingham and Leatherhead by 2 tries to nil . This was a hard game as the E/L forwards won plenty of ball but the Sevenoaks defence was excellent and constant pressure and strong running brought victory. The next game had Sevenoaks pitched against the hosts who, as always, had a strong team and of course vocal local support. The Sevenoaks forwards having learnt lots from their previous game got the upper hand in the loose play and there was some fine handling in the backs to give both wingers Sebastian Fear and Nick Penney scores with Thomas Tilling adding one for the forwards in a fine individual effort. The final score being 3-1. The semi-final brought on a very strong side from Truro, nearly our first international fixture, with the Cornish flag flying high over the touch line. This was the most intense game our guys played. We knew that Truro's weakness would be that they would underestimate us and we had to score in the first two minutes. The scrum half Dawid Vorster took the initiative from the scrummage 15 metres out and went blind beating the opposition and scoring in the corner a fine individual try. The only one scored against Truro in the tournament. The whole team and especially Joseph Irvine, Thomas Oldroyd, and Nick Penney tackled fantastically to hold the scores to 1-1 when James Carter, the skipper, stepped forward to win the game on the toss of coin. The final brought on our old antagonist Brighton and we were soon 1-nil up through Tom Nohre and putting on the pressure. Unfortunately there were 3 break out scores and despite never giving up and with Thomas Tilling, player of the day, adding a great individual try at the end we still ended up valiant losers 4-2. Every single player of the squad played the best rugby of their lives and are already looking forward to getting their hands on the cup next year
