Sevenoaks Under 9s Victorious at Harlequins

29 Jan 2007

Sevenoaks fielded a strong squad for the pool stages of the annual Quins Curtain Raiser Cup staged by, and at Harlequins.

In a reduced pool of three due to the withdrawal of Bank of England, Sevenoaks faced fellow Kentish team Cranbrook, and Lewes of East Sussex.

In a tense, thrilling and very close opening match, Sevenoaks faced a Cranbrook squad known for their quality and strength. Playing some of their best rugby so far with flowing, linked-up attacking play combined with totally committed defensive work, Sevenoaks had Cranbrook pinned in their own half for virtually the entire first period. Despite the territorial advantage, though, Sevenoaks could only once find a way through Cranbrook’s effective defence, with a try by Tom Cantlay.

In the second period, Sevenoaks had to dig deep to protect their lead in the face of prolonged pressure by Cranbrook. However, a determined defence coupled with some sharp breaks that caused Cranbrook problems prevented the lead being lost. Thus Sevenoaks won 1 – 0.

The second match, against Lewes, proved less challenging with Sevenoaks able to produce some dynamic running play. Building again on an excellent defence, Sevenoaks linked up well and ran out 6 – 0 winners despite a wiling Lewes squad that never gave up. Tries were scored by Ton Cantlay (2), Marcus Lyne, Kieran Thomas, Alex McCann and Sam Thompson.

Finishing top of their pool, Sevenoaks now progress to the next round, which will again be played at Harlequins
