Sevenoaks U15 19 Beckenham 0
05 Oct 2008
Wombwell stars in winning start
Sevenoaks Under 15s started their new season on Sunday with a win in driving rain over Beckenham at Knole Paddock. The Oaks started strongly with the forwards establishing a sound platform that allowed the ball to move across the back line. Full back Will Grist had the space on the outside to outpace the defenders for the first try, converted by Tommy Fuller for a 7 - 0 lead.
Keeping the pressure on Beckenham, the Oaks increased their lead with a second score from Grist to take a 12-point lead within the first 10 minutes. After the early onslaught, Beckenham came back into the game with some strong running from their inside centre who lacked the support to turn his line breaks into scores.
The Sevenoaks forwards showed some excellent individual and collective skills with one maul driven 20 metres upfield and strong rucking keeping the attacks alive through several phases. From a midfield set scrum, the ball moved quickly through the backs to give Connor Cooper a run to the line for the Oaks' third try, converted by Fuller for a 19 - 0 half time lead.
In the second half, Beckenham played with more purpose breaking through and applying pressure on the Sevenoaks line. From a penalty 5 metres out, the Beckenham ball carrier met a determined Sevenoaks defender who drove him back several metres. The Oaks regained possession from the fumbled ball and Beckenham's best chance of the game to score had passed.
