Sevenoaks U15 10 Cranbrook 37

19 Oct 2008

Under-strength Oaks hoisted by cranes

A well-prepared and skilful Cranbrook side proved too strong for a Sevenoaks team deprived of a dozen regular players through injury and non-availability.  Cranbrook took immediate advantage with an opening score from a penalty by moving the ball wide and outrunning a scrambling Oaks defence.  Sevenoaks play was too loose to secure quality possession and Cranbrook pressure provided turnover ball that they regularly turned into points. By half time, Sevenoaks were facing a 32 - 0 deficit.

In the second half, the Oaks rallied and achieved periods of sustained possession as the makeshift team achieved greater cohesion.  From a lineout deep in the Cranbrook 22, the Oaks forwards pressured the line.  Cranbrook shipped the ball backwards allowing Ben Wombwell to dive on loose ball to score an unconverted try.  From a similar move, the Oaks scored a second try as the forwards followed up loose ball from the lineout with Josh Marchant touching down.

In the final move of the game, Sevenoaks were pressing for a third score close to the Cranbrook line but lost possession allowing a Cranbrook player to run almost the length of the field down an undefended blindside, outpacing the cover defenders, for an unconverted try and a victory by 37 - 10.
