Cranbrook 10 v Sevenoaks 22

05 May 2007

Sevenoaks Under 15s travelled to Cranbrook on Saturday the 5th of May to play in an Invitational Rugby 10s challenge match as part of Cranbrook's 50th Anniversary celebrations. A rock hard pitch and a rock hard resolve were the order of the day as both sides displayed a competitive spirit more fitting to the beginning rather than the end of a hard season. The pace of the game was as furious as the teams' attitudes were sportsmanlike.

The early exchanges saw the game move at breathtaking pace from one end of the pitch to the other, the tackles were hard and the ground even harder as the 2 well matched sides battled for supremacy. Cranbrook drew first blood with an impressive backline move which stretched and then breached the Oaks' defence to allow them a try in the corner. Sevenoaks responded in kind with a trade mark try from Weeks who ran in from his own half to level the scores at 5 points to 5.

A continued period of Sevenoaks' pressure saw Weeks finish off a backs' move to give Oaks' the lead at 10 points to 5. The pace of the game and the determination of the players showed no signs of abating as every loose ball was ferociously contested. Cranbrook leveled the scores with a well crafted backs' try only to be disappointed a few minutes later by Oak's utility back Spark who created a gap and ran through the Cranbrook defence from 40 metres. Spark added the conversion and the half ended with Sevenoaks 17 - 10 leaders.

Within 5 minutes of the restart Oaks' had the put in to a scrum on their own 22. The ball was moved along the Oaks' backs to Pedder who using his pace and agility eluded the Cranbrook defence to run in from 50 metres. The score was still 22 points to 10 to the visitors when the match was ended early due to a dislocation injury suffered by a Cranbrook player. It was a a great pity that such a thrilling and entertaining game was marred by such an unfortunate accident. Both sides did credit to their clubs and to the game of rugby and will undoubtedly look forward to their next meeting on the field of play.
