Sevenoaks 10 Medway 26

15 Apr 2007

The last home match of the season was played in perfect conditions with both sides clearly determined to play open and entertaining rugby.
The opening exchanges were fiercely contested with as the play moved from one end of the pitch to the other at a breath taking pace. Honours were even for the 1st 10 minutes until Medway broke through the resolute Oak's defence and were rewarded with a converted try. For the remaining part of the half 'Oaks applied intense pressure to the visitors in what can only be described as furious rugby and determined team work. The ever threatening wing forward Carter made a trade mark break from a rolling maul and powered over to take the score to 5 points to 7. Not to be out done by their forward colleagues the Oaks' backs added a further 5 points to the tally with a blistering 40 metre run by Yeomans to score close to the posts. Yeomans was denied the extra 2 points
when his conversion attempt struck the upright. The half ended with with the visitors trailing by 3 points.

The 2nd half saw a slightly less flowing game as the heat and the hard pitch began to take its toll. Medway scored a converted try within 5 minutes of the restart to take the score to 10 -14. Both sides continued to contest for every metre of ground and every loose ball. In the end despite incredibly impressive and determined performances by the whole Oaks' team Medway proved too strong and were able to add a further 2 tries to the scoreboard to emerge winners at 10 points to 26. The game was closer than the scoreline suggests, the difference being the ability to the visitors to capitlise on the rare occasions that gaps appeared in the normally
watertight Sevenoaks defence.
