Oaks Under 15s Lose out in Quarter Final of Cup

18 Mar 2007

Last Sunday saw the gathering of the best rugby teams in kent at the Old
Dartfordians' ground for the preliminary stages of the Kent Festival of
Youth. Sevenoaks under 15's started their campaign with an 8 minute each way
match against Canterbury: Typically of Oak's they were slow to start and
absorbed some unexpected pressure for the 1st 3 or 4 minutes . However once
the Sevenoaks' machine was firing on its usual 4 cylinders the flow of play
turned in favour of 'Oaks who dominated in the forwards and provided their
backs with the opportunity of releasing wing Mckenzie for an impressive
idividual try which saw him cut through the entire Canterbury defence to
score in the corner. Utliity back Spark converted to the difficult kick to
give Oaks a 7 point lead. Canterbury reponded with a converted try against
the flow of play to bring the scores level. Further pressure from Sevenoaks
and some deft passing from Safaty, Day and Spark gave captain Crane the
chance to show his strength and pace for another try which was ably
converted by Spark to give 'Oaks the match 14 points to 7.

Oak's went on to win their group with a convincing win 17 point to 7 win
over Deal and Bettshanger. This was a bruising match which saw 'Oaks
concede an early try and conversion before back row Harmon Tatton ghosted
his way over the try line to bring Sevenoaks back into contention. Spark
added the conversion and loose forwards Carter and Crane finished the job
with 2 incredible indivdual tries. Spark again added an additonal 2 points
to give 'Oaks a comfortable victory.

Having won their group Sevenoaks found themselves facing number one seeds
Blackheath in the quarter finals. Injury had by now depleted the Oaks' side
who were unable to stem the relentless attacking power of Blackheath. The
first half ended with Blackheath 5 points to nil ahead. The 2nd half
produced some valiant play from 'Oaks as they battled against a highly
motivated and talented opposition. In the end Blackheath proved too strong
and triumphed with a 24 point to 0 victory to take their well deserved place
in the semi final and final .
