Sevenoaks 44 - Aylesford 0

04 Oct 2009

Sevenoaks unbeaten run continues

Sevenoaks under 15s continued their unbeaten run witha 44 -0 win over Aylesford on Sunday 4th October. The Sevenoaks machine spluttered into action as the receiving Sevenoaks pack failed to claim the kick off and were then rucked off loose ball. Indeed, for the first few minutes of the game Aylesford looked threatening and Sevenoaks were thankful for some tidy work by full back Rupert Harris who caught cleanly and swiftly counter attacked with a 50 yard run. Indeed, it proved to be a flawless morning for the Sevenoaks full back. Young ‘Ru’ caught everything and ran with flair and pace creating one of two tries for Adam Renton and one for himself.Indeed, it was not long before Sevenoaks opened their account. Captain fantastic Alex Rolfe went over after an excellent cut inside from outside centre Christian Slater and Ledsham was next to taste glory after a powerful run from Danny Sinclair split the defence. Slick work from the lineout sent the ball skimming across from scrum half Tom Scott to outside centre Slater- via Rugg and debutant Rory Martin- who again cut through the wrong footed Aylesford defence to score the third. Sinclair again ran powerfully to pick up and drive for the fourth. Never satisfied, an ever demanding Head Coach John Rugg gave his team a stern talking too at half time and demanded‘Greater control and dominance in the ruck’.

Not wanting to disappoint the team took to the field with renewed vigour. However, it took time to break the defence down and tries were slow to come.It was George Leahy who was to break the second half deadlock. Showing his soccer skills and speed of thought, he neatly side footed a loose Aylesford pass over the line and fell on the ball- not as easy as it sounds-and Sevenoaks second half account was open. Tom Barnes looked to off load close to the line but there was no one keeping him company so he took the initiative and scored himself. With the score rising faster than house prices on the south side of Sevenoaks it was left to Adam Renton to finish a fine team movement with Slater providing the spark, taking the ball at speed off loading to Rolfe who combined neatly with Renton for the eight try of the day.

So ended a satisfactory morning for the Sevenaoks team. A quick straw poll of supporters gave Man of the Match to Roo Harris with Danny Sinmclair a close second. Aylesford deserve a congratulations for a spirited performance and meeting the challenge head on. John Ruggs headache is to juggle a squad of talented players and find teams willing to take Sevenoaks on. Both Blackheath and Old Colfeians have already cried off this season-unwilling to take up the challenge after losing bruising encounters last season. Finally, conversions are important. Only two of eight tries were converted.
