Mighty Oaks do the double!
squad won the London and South East divisional plate competition beating a
strong Norfolk team on Sunday in Middlesex. The squad now qualify to
represent Kent and
the London division in the National semi final on April 18th, a feat not
achieved in the club's history.
North Walsham started the stronger making a number of breaks through their
impressive backline; only a couple of interceptions from George Beale
kept them from scoring. Sevenoaks, showing 5 changes, two positional, from
last week took time to settle and North Walsham duly took the lead with a
penalty
after a number of infringements by the Sevenoaks forwards.
This seemed to galvanise the Oaks as they used the elements and slope to
camp in the oppositions half. Following excellent linout work by Johnson and
Medhurst, the ball went through 5 phases before openside flanker, Will De
Smith, went over in the corner. Sevenoaks, now dominating all aspects tore
into the opposition with gusto and Will De Smith scored again in the corner,
converted by Ollie Shirtcliff from the touchline. Charlie Roberts then ended
a sweeping move to crash over from full back to bring the score to 17 - 6 at
half time.
The second half started well for North Walsham but they couldnt break down
the Oaks defence until they scored a well worked try late on. Just before
this, Sevenoaks had worked there way up the pitch and after a series of
drives had been repelled, Ollie Shirtcliff dropped a goal to keep the game
out of reach. The final score was 20-11.
