Last minute try puts Oaks in sight of the treble!
Sevenoaks U17s qualified for their third successive final this season onSunday, waiting until the last minute to score the decisive try against a
tough, well organised but ultimately indisciplined Camberley.
Despite conceeding a significant weight advantege and losing inspirational
skipper Pettit in the first quarter, the Sevenoaks U17s showed huge reserves
of mental and phyisical spirit aligned with a great defence, to scrape
through to the final of the London and SE final.
From the start Camberley seemed to have the edge in the loose and dominated
possession but could not get through the home defence. A number of
opportunities went begging and the match remained scoreless in the first
half.
Sevenoaks upped their game in the second half and good breaks from no8 Hadi
and centre Foley kept the play in Camberley's half. As the game entered the
third quarter, Camberley, with their back row edging the ruck area, seemed
to be in control but their indiscipline led to a number of penailties and
back chat put them back further to loose any momentum gained. With minutes
left on the clock, Sevenoaks sensed their chance and after a great run from
Thompson, Saunders changed direction to put full back Beale through, who cut
inside to score near the posts. Much to the delight of the home crowd,
Saunders slotted the conversion.
When Camberley kicked off it was fitting that Beale cleared the lines to end
any hope of a comeback.
Next Sunday, 21st March, the U17s travel to Aylesford for the Kent Cup Final
against Maidstone.
