Unbeaten run ended as pack dominate
Sevenoaks U17s left the rain behind to travel to rural Hampshire on Sundayfor their quarter final tie against Overton who were previously unbeaten at
home for 2 years.
From the first moment, the forwards led by Josh Pettit, took the game to the
opposition. The front row of Vincent,Walker and Thompson took nine against
the head to provide the backs with plenty of ball. A great line from Owen
sliced his way through the home defence for the first try. Despite numerous
chances and with Johnson, Medhurst and Naismith controlling the linout, the
home defence held firm. A crunching tackle on winger Tan summed up the
commitment of Overton.
The second half started in the worst way possible as Sevenoaks conceeded a
converted try straight from the kick off as Oaks were slow to clear. Despite
a penalty from Saunders to make it 8 -7 Overton had their best spell of the
match. This seemed to wake Oaks up. Openside De Smith, having a fine game,
set up a great field position and a series of driving mauls took them to the
line. However Overton turned it over and cleared only to find winger Roberts
who handed off one defender and scorched outside the full back to score. The
half backs of Saunders and Shirtcliff were now pulling the strings and
getting the dominant pack into some great positions for the backs to run
through some well drilled moves. Although they conceeded a breakaway try and
a penalty, Beale was becoming more prominant in defence to suff out any
further scores. The pressure eventaully told as further scores were not to
be denied as Nohre, Hadi and Owen all went over.
The semi final match takes place at Knole Paddock on March 14th, KO 2pm.
