Sevenoaks Academy 24 Maidstone 12

Oaks overcome gritty Stones

The Sevenoaks Academy's attacking game plan produced an early try for Spark after Barber joined the line from the blindside wing to create the overlap. But faced with a paucity of possession tactics were soon revised and the home side were forced to prove their defensive metal for large chunks of the game. Maidtsone rarely threatened through their backs but the pack were tireless. Oak's resistance was sound and based on a truly collective effort with Naysmith, Spark and Jones making important tackles.

Oaks profited again as soon as they put 3 phases together and Eakins scored after good work from Newport. The driving game finally produced a try for the visitors just before the break which gave them the impetus to repeat the pattern all through the second half. Maistone allowed little space and time around the base of scrums and the loose so Oaks could build no momentum until McCorry burst away from a quick penalty. He fed Kedge whose strength and pace was too much for the cover running in from thirty yards.

More turgid defence and then suddenly a rare thing of beauty. Kedge got trapped on his own line but muscled out a few yards. Field decided to run from the ruck and fed Peters through the tackle. McCorry carried on and re-found Field with a long pass whose sprint for the line started to fade but Newport charged up and collected a one-handed pass back inside to score under the posts. Field added his second conversion and Maidstone's second driving score was little consolation for so much effort.
