Blackheath 34 Sevenoaks U18 14

Heath prove too strong

Sevenoaks started strongly away at Blackheath in their latest Kent League encounter and after missing two early penalty attempts at goal maintained plenty of pressure. The pack struggled to settle at the lineout but was well coordinated in the loose behind Naismith and Turvey. Field kicked well out of hand despite erring from the tee.

When Blackheath managed their first attack they fumbled and Field flicked a pass to Kedge who beat a man and had the defence scrambling. Covering 60 yards he fended off two more tackles to score near the posts and Field converted. Blackheath were unsettled and Oaks controlled the game for long spells. Barry, Palmer and Maydon worked hard in support and Weeks made some devastating breaks which deserved to be rewarded. Blackheath began to turn things round as the half came to a close but they were held at bay until gifted a penalty 10 yards out. They opted for a lineout and exploited Oaks first major defensive error when the inside centre cut through to score. What happened in the second half was something of a travesty.

Turvey played with usual gusto but was binned for 10 minutes which signalled Oaks' turn to lose their rhythm. Blackheath runners began to break tackles and get ahead of the gain line and they scored two quick convereted tries. When Oaks tried to re-establish themselves they forced the play too much and started to make errors. Newport led one surge into the Blackheath half but the fight was over when the Blackheath produced two further tries in quick succession.

Oaks hardly deserved to fall so far behind. Field did not think so and after breaking through and chipping ahead for Facer he followed up to collect the loose ball, score and convert.
